Manchester July 2006
Continuing to make the best of what Manchester
has to offer... looking to be a little more reckless, have
a little more fun, try some new things...?!

The infamous Rusholme "Curry
Mile" (actually half-a-mile if you're being pedantic!)

An event in the Manchester
Museum

The saga of the bike....
My nice black mountain bike was stolen form my previous
address to much wailing and gnashing of teeth... I hadn't
really been using it, but had just cleaning/pumped/polished
ready to do so. Ah well - carry on with the bus, walking,
car, etc... Then I moved to Chorlton and was walking over
2 hours a day to work and back. Saw this bike for £15...
what a wreck (photo doesn't do it justice!)... but it gets
me to work in 25 mins. Don't use the back gears, don't cycle
too fast (brakes!) - so I get overtaken by everyone else,
but can't tell you what a relief it is not to walk - and
even the bus takes 45 mins once you factor in walking each
end... in fact if I catch a bus, I normally am overtaking
it along the route!

End of Summer: I was on
a panel for work, talking to postgraduate students about
jobs other than academia once you are post-PhD... It's not
always your dream job first time round you know!

Classical music, food,
drink - what more could be desired (and then about an hour
later the heavens opened!)

Oh, and there I am on Dan's

Think Emma had already
won by this point

Exercising the dogs before
the race

Here we go...

And coming in... (not my
dog, I don't believe!)

For the serious betters...

Jim thinks he's won over
£100 (on a couple of £ bet) and then realised
that the 3 dogs he picked did come in 1-2-3, but not exactly
in the order he picked!

Making sure that we all
know how to clip on

Instructor helping us round
the first bit (the only bit where you can get a refund -
first foot on the rope ladder & you're paying!)

Gary @ top of first rope
ladder - me next (this was the hardest bit for more, getting
up the rope ladders!)

Gary goes on the 'black
route' - I stuck to the 'blue' (they're coded like ski runs!)

Hywel lands after nearly
knocking over someone who was wondering under the zip-wire!

Claudia and Maria landing
on the platform

Bex does the Tarzan Swing
(scary - a black?! - you just drop for a couple of metres
than smack into the rope)

The final zip wire - great
fun (it went on for ages!)

Look at the relief on getting
all the way round! I'm not brilliant with heights so was
chuffed with myself. Hurt a lot the next day though - felt
quite like had whiplash round the neck - what was all that
about!

Helen (the birthday girl!)
lands with style!

Sue follows...

And Jim manages to run
in!
