  Faith

"Like a large tent where travellers meet, Faith is a stopping point on a journey through the faith landscape of the UK.

At the Zone's entrance is a sculpture of a newborn child, with a short film in which children of different faiths share their thoughts about God. This reminds us that our spiritual journey begins in childhood. We pass by a graphic portrayal of nine major faiths practised in the UK which are participating in the zone.

Turning to the right, the impact on the UK of two thousand years of Christian history is explored. Practising Christians consider how today's ideas about justice, freedom, education and health care are still influenced by Christianity. They tell us who and what from history inspires them: an actress who strives to make accessible the story of Jesus selects The Tyndale Bible, the first to be printed in English; a human worker identifies with the eighteenth-century black ex-slave Oluadah Equiano who campaigned in the UK for the abolition of slavery.

Straight ahead, we see how different faiths in this country mark key life experiences. Photographic stories on nine crystal pillars illustrate the distinctive perspective of each faith group. The creation of these photographs involved a major collaboration between faith communities which granted the photographers privileged access to their sacred ceremonies.

Following a display on religion's role in conflict and reconciliation, the first part of the journey ends as we hear reflections on death, belief and an onward journey from people of different faiths, as well as of no faith.

The next are asks 'How shall I live?' and gives some people's answers in a collage of images, illustrations and quotations. We are then invited to write a thought for the year 2000 and post it in a giant honeycomb wall. These messages will be sealed up for the next fifty years."

From the Millennium Dome Experience: The Guide, p25

As a Christian, and considering that the year 2000 is 2000 years after the birth of Christ, I feel that it is right that the largest sector of faith was devoted to Christianity. There were several of the plaques as above, along with plenty of other audio-visual content! But I also approved of the general message of the faith zone is that you live and let live, and everyone has a right to their own opinion, beliefs and way of life!
